The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel nervous before seeing Michelangelo’s David, but there I was—half-awake, shoes echoing on the stone floor of the Accademia, following our guide Paola through a tangle of early-morning chatter. The city outside was all mopeds and espresso smells; inside, it was just us (eight total) and that unreal statue. Paola told us about Michelangelo carving it from a block nobody wanted. She pointed out veins in the marble—actual veins!—and I remember thinking, “How did he even do that?” Someone behind me whispered “wow” under their breath. It wasn’t just the size; it was how alive it felt. I’m still not sure why that hit me so hard.

We wandered out into Piazza del Duomo where sunlight bounced off the Baptistery’s bronze doors. There were tourists everywhere but also locals darting past on bikes or pausing for a cigarette. Paola explained why Brunelleschi’s dome looks impossible (it kind of is), and I tried to imagine building something like that in the 1400s with no cranes or anything. We didn’t go inside but stood craning our necks while she traced the outlines in the air. Later, walking Via dei Calzaiuoli toward Piazza della Signoria, I got distracted by a bakery window—those little almond cookies? Tempting.

Piazza della Repubblica felt different—wide open, music from a street violinist drifting around old columns. At Piazza della Signoria, statues everywhere: Neptune looking grumpy, Perseus holding Medusa’s head like it was nothing. There’s even a copy of David right where the real one used to stand (Paola joked he’d moved inside for better air conditioning). She had us rub the nose of Il Porcellino for luck—I did it too even though I don’t really believe in that stuff.

After lunch (not included but we found sandwiches nearby), we regrouped for the Uffizi Gallery. The place is massive—room after room of paintings you’ve seen in textbooks but never this close. Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” glowed under soft lights while outside you could see the Arno River sliding by through tall windows. Paola told us about floods and mafia bombs and restoration work; honestly, I lost track of all the stories but caught enough to realize this museum has survived more than most people do in a lifetime.
