The Experience

Suddenly you’re there—standing in front of Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia. I’d seen it in photos so many times, but in person? It’s almost awkward how alive he feels. Our guide, Chiara, kept pointing out little things I never noticed before—the veins on his hands, the way his eyes look past you. The gallery felt cool and a bit hushed, except for one kid who whispered “wow” so quietly I almost laughed. I probably stared longer than anyone else in our group.

We stepped back outside into Florence’s noise and sunlight. The Piazza del Duomo was packed with people snapping photos or just gawking at Brunelleschi’s dome (I get it). Chiara told us about how they built it without scaffolding—her hands moving like she was building something herself. We didn’t go inside the Dome but honestly, just seeing it from below was enough for me that day. There was this faint smell of roasting coffee drifting from somewhere nearby—maybe that tiny bar on the corner? Hard to say.

I lost track of time wandering down Via dei Calzaiuoli—so many shop windows blurring together—and then we landed in Piazza della Repubblica where a street musician played something slow on an accordion. There were stories about old Florence everywhere; Chiara had a way of making even statues seem like gossiping neighbors. At Piazza della Signoria she pointed out Perseus holding Medusa’s head (not subtle), and I tried to imagine what this square must’ve felt like centuries ago with all that drama going on.

The Ponte Vecchio was our last stop before lunch—a jumble of jewelry shops and tourists leaning over to watch the Arno River glinting below. Lunch break meant a chance to sit down (finally) before heading into the Uffizi Gallery. Inside, it was quieter than I expected, except when we reached Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus”—that room always buzzes a little louder. Chiara explained how the Medici family basically collected half of Italy here; I still think about some of those paintings when I close my eyes at night.
