The experience
I nearly walked right past our guide at Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. I was distracted by the marble stripes and a group of teenagers arguing about gelato flavors. The morning felt cool but sticky, and I remember thinking my shoes would never survive a full day in Florence. But then our guide (Francesca? Frances?) waved us over with this big, open smile and suddenly we were off, weaving through narrow streets that smelled like espresso and something sweet, maybe those little almond cookies?
The Duomo hit me harder than I expected. You see it in photos but standing under Brunelleschi’s dome is different: the stone almost hums. Francesca pointed out details on the Baptistery doors I’d never have noticed (she called them “the original Renaissance comics,” which made me laugh). We dodged cyclists and old men shouting greetings across Piazza della Signoria, then crossed Ponte Vecchio where gold sparkled behind dusty glass. I tried to count how many languages I heard on that bridge: gave up after five.
Skipping the line at the Uffizi was a small miracle. There was a crowd snaking around the block by noon. Inside, Botticelli’s Venus was smaller than I’d imagined but somehow more alive: her hair looked like it might move if you stared long enough. The air smelled faintly of varnish and old paper. Later at the Accademia, standing in front of Michelangelo’s David (with my headphones slipping off one ear), I just… stopped talking for once. Even with all the people around, there was this hush: like everyone forgot themselves for a second.
I’m still not sure how we crammed so much into one day trip in Florence. My feet were sore but my head was buzzing with stories: half from Francesca, half from just watching Florentines live their lives around us. If you only have one day here, well… this is probably how you want to do it.
