The experience

The Uffizi Gallery opens the morning. A licensed guide leads you through the painting collections for 1.5 hours, stopping at works by Botticelli (Birth of Venus and Spring), Caravaggio's Medusa, Michelangelo's Tondo Doni (the only painting he made on wood), and pieces by Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci and others who shaped the Italian Renaissance. The guide points out what matters. You take notes or just look. When the guided portion ends, the galleries stay open to you. Spend another hour there or five minutes. The ticket is yours and the space is yours.

Then the guide walks you to the Accademia Gallery, Florence's second-most-visited museum. In an hour, you see Michelangelo's David, the marble figure carved between 1501 and 1504, standing 17 feet tall. The Accademia holds one of the world's largest collections of Michelangelo's work: sculptures, unfinished pieces, the Prison Room with figures he designed for Pope Julius II. You also pass through the museum of musical instruments and the collection of paintings with gold backgrounds. After the guide finishes, you can stay inside the museum to look longer. The entry is included and the time is yours.

Groups stay small, so the guide can actually talk and you can actually hear. If your group is larger than four people, you get an earphone radio so the guide's voice reaches you even in crowded galleries.
