The Experience

The van was already winding up the slopes when I realized how far Taormina sits from Mount Etna — maybe an hour or so, but it felt like another world. Our guide, Paolo, had this habit of pausing mid-sentence to let us catch a glimpse out the window: black lava fields, patches of wildflowers, clouds moving so fast you could almost hear them. The air got colder as we climbed. Someone behind me laughed about not bringing enough layers; I’d made the same mistake.

The cable car ride was quick but jittery — you could feel the wind pushing at the glass. At 2900 meters, everything felt sharper: the rocks under my boots, that faint sulfur smell (not as bad as I’d feared), even the way people spoke quieter up there. Paolo pointed out where last year’s eruption had left a jagged scar down one side. We hiked around the base of the summit craters with a volcanologist who explained how Etna’s always shifting. It’s weirdly peaceful up there — just crunching footsteps and little puffs of steam.

I didn’t expect to enjoy crawling into a volcanic cave, but it was oddly fun — cool air, rough walls, and everyone bumping helmets. Lunch after that was at some rustic spot; I still think about those olives and bread dipped in peppery oil. Sicilian food hits different when you’re tired and dusty. Then Alcantara Gorges: icy water rushing between dark stone walls, families splashing around, teenagers daring each other to jump in. My feet went numb instantly (I did it anyway). Not sure what I loved more — the drama of Etna or that sudden shock of cold river water. Either way, I slept hard that night.
