The Experience

I didn’t expect the silence up there on Etna. Our guide Franco kept pausing to let us listen—no birds, just wind scraping across the old lava fields. The ground felt weirdly crunchy under my boots, still black from eruptions decades ago. Franco pointed out where the 1983 lava flow swallowed part of a road (“that used to be someone’s shortcut home,” he said). I tried to picture what it must’ve been like when everything was moving and hot—I mean, you can see how the volcano changes things for centuries.

After climbing around the Silvestri Craters (I stopped halfway up one—my legs aren’t what they used to be), we drove down toward Zafferana Etnea. The honey farm smelled sweet even before we got inside. I tasted chestnut honey that was almost bitter, then a spoonful of orange blossom—so different from what I buy at home. They let us try olive oil and these sun-dried tomatoes too; pretty sure I embarrassed myself going back for seconds. Franco laughed and said it’s normal here.

The last stop was Gambino Winery on Etna’s north side. You could feel the air shift—cooler, greener somehow. We walked through rows of vines with a woman named Lucia who explained how volcanic soil changes the wine (she had this way of rolling her Rs that made everything sound musical). Lunch was simple but perfect: bread still warm, caponata, cheeses, and five wines poured one after another. I kept mixing up which glass was which but nobody seemed to mind. By the end I felt both sleepy and oddly awake—the kind of day you want to stretch out just a little longer.
