The Valley of the Temples is an archaeological park in Sicily with an exceptional state of conservation—a series of important Doric temples from the Hellenic period that correspond to the ancient city of Akragas, now Agrigento. Since 2000 it has been a regional archaeological park. You walk among temples dedicated to Hera, Jupiter and Hercules, moving through the monumental original nucleus of the city. The scale and the detail of what survives make the Greek period tangible in a way most ruins do not.

After the temples, the route passes through the center of Sicily, moving through typical villages of the hinterland where you see the colors and plants of the interior. This stretch is not filler—it is the landscape that connects the two sites and frames the day. Then you arrive at Villa Romana del Casale, a Roman villa known for its mosaics depicting scenes from the Roman period, including hunting and women in daily dress. The mosaics show how Romans lived centuries after the Greeks built the temples you saw that morning.
