The experience

The drive heads west from Galway through landscape that opens up as you go: stone walls, the Maam Turk Mountains rising to your left, and villages where Irish is still the everyday language. Kylemore Abbey sits in a valley below a neo-Gothic church, built in the 1860s as a romantic gift and now home to Benedictine nuns. The return to Galway runs south along the coast, passing through Inverin, Spiddal and Barna.
