The Experience

The drive heads west from Galway through landscape that opens up as you go — stone walls, the Maam Turk Mountains rising to your left, and villages where Irish is still the everyday language. You're not on a bus schedule; the vehicle stops when you want to look, and the driver knows which turns lead to the views that don't make the postcards. Kylemore Abbey sits in a valley below a neo-Gothic church, built in the 1860s as a romantic gift and now home to Benedictine nuns. The Victorian Walled Garden is open to walk through, and there are cafes on the grounds if you want to linger — Mitchell's Cafe, the Garden Tea House, or the Express Cafe for crepes and ice cream.

The Sky Road is the famous loop above Clifden, a route that climbs among the hills overlooking Clifden Bay and the offshore islands of Inishturk and Turbot. On a clear day it's the vantage point for photographing Clifden's two church spires with the Twelve Bens mountains behind them. The return to Galway runs south along the coast, passing through Inverin, Spiddal and Barna — a scenic drive that can include a stop at Standúns, a family-run shop specializing in Irish gifts and fashion, if you ask.
