The experience
The tour leaves Merchants Road outside the Kinlay Hostel at 9:30am. You'll head west through Salthill, where the 4km Galway Promenade runs along the bay with views toward the Clare Hills. A local ritual is to kick the wall at the promenade's end. From there the coast road winds through Barna and Furbo into Spiddal, a Gaeltacht village of thatched-roof homes and traditional appeal on the shores of Galway Bay.
The landscape opens into Connemara proper: moorlands, the Twelve Bens peaks, Lough Corrib, and the Inagh Valley. You'll pass Derryclare Lough, a freshwater lake and viewpoint for Pine Island, then reach Clifden, founded in 1812 and positioned between mountains and ocean. The ruined Clifden Castle sits on the hillside above. From there the tour takes the Sky Road, a 16km circular route that climbs high above the Atlantic with panoramic views across the region: on a clear day the vista spans far enough to justify the drive.
At this point you've already chosen your main stop. If you picked Connemara National Park, you'll spend three hours on the Diamond Hill trails, which climb through wild uplands and open onto views across the entire region. The park is free and accessible. If you chose Kylemore Abbey instead, you'll have three hours to explore the castle built in the 1860s as a wedding gift and its Victorian Walled Garden. The driver can source discounted admission tickets (cash payment required). The return to Galway follows the same scenic route in reverse, with the driver providing live commentary throughout the day.
