The Experience
I didn’t expect the air to taste so clean when we got off the bus in Connemara. It’s like you can smell the rain before it even starts — and yeah, it did drizzle a bit, but nobody seemed to mind. Our driver, Michael, kept tossing out bits of history as we rolled past stone walls and sheep that looked like they owned the place. I tried asking about the Irish language signs (they’re everywhere), and he grinned, saying even locals argue over pronunciations sometimes.
The hike options at Connemara National Park were laid out for us — three trails, different lengths. I picked the middle one because I’m not exactly a mountain goat, but wanted more than just a stroll. The ground was springy underfoot, all moss and heather, and there was this sharp scent from gorse bushes when you brushed past. At one point I stopped just to listen: wind rattling through grass, someone’s laughter echoing up the hill. Two hours felt both long and short — I could’ve sat on that bench looking out at the valley for ages.
Afterwards we warmed up in the little tea room near the welcome center (the scones are better than I expected — maybe it was just being hungry after walking). On our way back toward Galway we stopped at Salthill Promenade. The sea was rough that day; salt spray in the air and locals walking dogs who looked happier than anyone else around. A kid tried skipping stones but mostly just splashed himself — made me laugh for no real reason.
