The experience
You choose between a Mercedes Vito or a BMW X5 when you book, so the vehicle matches your group size and comfort. The driver picks you up and handles all the driving while you take in the landscape: wide open spaces, towering mountains, and the Atlantic coastline that defines Connemara. Kylemore Abbey is the centerpiece: a castle built in the 1870s as a romantic gift by Mitchell Henry to his wife Margaret, later converted into a Benedictine convent. The admission is €18 per adult (€15.50 for seniors), paid separately, and the neo-Gothic Church on the grounds was built in Margaret's memory after her death.
The route takes you along Sky Road, an 11-kilometer circular drive that climbs above Clifden and opens onto views of Clifden Bay, Inish Turbot, Inish Shark, Inishboffin and Omey Island. You'll stop at the Alcock and Brown Landing Site, 4 kilometers south of Clifden town, where Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown landed their Vickers-Vimy biplane in 1919 after the first transatlantic flight. Ballynahinch Castle, an O'Flaherty stronghold, marks centuries of Connemara's history. Aughnanure Castle (€5 admission, separate) sits just outside Oughterard. Clifden itself, the capital of Connemara, is a market town with shops and lunch spots, though meals aren't included in the tour price.
Because it's a private tour, there's no waiting for other groups and no fixed itinerary beyond the main stops. Your guide can adjust the pace and the time spent at each site. The vehicle is air-conditioned and bottled water is provided throughout the day.
