The tour starts with pickup from your Yogyakarta accommodation in the morning and a drive to Mount Bromo, crossing landscapes that show why the route between cities takes time. You settle into one of several available guesthouses near the volcano—Cafe Lava Hostel, Cemara Indah, Lava View Lodge or Bromo Camp House, depending on availability—with the evening free to rest before the early start.

Day two begins before dawn. You rise to witness Mount Bromo's sunrise, the most photographed moment on the route, then return for breakfast before traveling to Bondowoso City, where you'll stay the night before the Ijen hike. The drive covers ground, and the accommodation options there—Ijen View Bondowoso, Grand Padis, or Palm Hotel Bondowoso—put you close to the crater trailhead.

The final day starts in the middle of the night with a hike up Ijen Crater. From the rim, you look out over the surrounding landscape; on clear mornings and with the right conditions, you may see the blue flames that rise from inside the crater, though they are not guaranteed. After exploring the crater, you're driven to your accommodation in Bali, ending the three-day route there. All transport includes ferry tickets to Bali, and a packed breakfast box goes with you on the Ijen day.

The hike to Ijen Crater's rim starts in the middle of the night so you reach the top around sunrise. You'll need moderate fitness; the trail is steep and the altitude gains as you climb, and the air near the crater can be thick with sulfur. Bring comfortable hiking shoes and a jacket.

Is the blue flame at Ijen something we're guaranteed to see?
