The Experience

I didn’t expect the wind to smell like salt and incense at the same time. We’d barely made it past the entrance of Uluwatu Temple when our driver, Wayan, handed me a sarong (I tied it wrong at first — he fixed it with a laugh). The cliffs here are sharp, almost too dramatic, and there’s this constant soundtrack of waves smashing below. I remember thinking: how do people pray with all that noise? But then you see an old woman lighting an offering under a frangipani tree, totally calm.

We wandered along the edge — not too close because honestly, my knees get weird around heights — and Wayan pointed out monkeys plotting near some tourists’ bags. He told us to keep our sunglasses hidden (good advice; one guy wasn’t so lucky). The sun started dipping low, turning everything gold. I tried to take photos but nothing really caught how huge the ocean felt from up here. That’s when you realize why everyone talks about this place.

The Kecak fire dance starts just as the sky goes pink. There’s no music except for dozens of men chanting “cak-cak-cak” in circles — it gets inside your head in this odd way, almost like you can feel it in your chest. The dancers’ hands flicker in the torchlight, telling stories I only half-understood but still felt pulled into. Our seats were packed tight; someone next to me offered a snack wrapped in banana leaf (I should’ve asked what it was). By the end, smoke drifted over us and I could still hear those chants echoing as we walked back to the car. It’s hard to explain why that stuck with me — maybe just being part of something ancient for an hour or two.
