The Experience

We’d barely finished dinner in Bali when the van pulled up—felt too early and too late at the same time. The drive to Gilimanuk Harbor was mostly quiet, just headlights flickering past rice fields and the odd warung still open. I remember our guide, Pak Agus, handed out bottled water and asked if anyone had done a night trek before. Someone joked about needing coffee more than courage. Crossing to Java on the ferry felt surreal—suddenly it was midnight but also not, since we switched time zones. The air smelled different on Java’s side, kind of earthy and sharp.

The drive to Paltuding trailhead was a blur of winding roads and nervous laughter. By 2am we were hiking under stars that looked bigger than usual—maybe because there’s no city light out there. The path is dusty and steep in places; my legs burned way sooner than I’d admit. Agus kept an eye on everyone, slowing down for us stragglers (me included). Somewhere near the rim he pointed out sulfur miners already at work—just headlamps bobbing in the dark, their silhouettes weirdly heroic against the crater glow.

I didn’t really believe in “blue fire” until I saw it—ghostly flames curling along the rocks below us, flickering like something from a dream or a science video. It stings your nose a bit (they give you gas masks), and you can hear this low hiss from the vents. Some folks went down into the crater for a closer look; I stayed up top with Agus and watched dawn creep over the acid lake instead. That turquoise color is real—it almost hurt my eyes after so much darkness. We just stood there for a while not saying much, which felt right.

On the way back we stopped at Jagir Waterfall—cold spray on tired faces woke me up better than any coffee could’ve. Breakfast was simple but good: fried bananas and strong Javanese tea at a roadside stall where locals smiled at our muddy boots. The ride back to Bali was mostly naps and swapping photos on our phones. Still think about that silence by the crater sometimes—you know?
