The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and a private drive to Uluwatu Temple, where the clifftop setting frames the ocean below. The temple's history runs back to a Majapahit monk named Mpu Kuturan, who established several key temples across Bali. Inscriptions at the site record this founding. You'll have time to walk the grounds before the sun begins to drop, and the sarong provided fits the dress code for entry.
The kecak fire dance unfolds as the light fades. Hundreds of men in black and white sarongs sit in a lotus position around a central platform, their hands raised, chanting "ke-cak-ke-cak" in a hypnotic rhythm while dancers in lamplight act out the story of Rama and Sita. The performance is live and the chanting is the only music: no instruments, just the human voice layered and looped. Your driver waits and brings you back to your hotel when it ends.
