The experience

The snorkeling happens in three separate bays, each with its own draw. Manta Bay is where the manta rays glide through clear water: the main reason most people book this trip. Gamat Bay holds vibrant coral reefs and smaller reef fish. Crystal Bay offers turquoise water and a calmer setting if the other sites are crowded. You get snorkeling equipment (mask, fins, snorkel) and spend enough time at each site to move past the initial descent and actually see what lives there. A guide in English stays with the group throughout.

The boat journey itself takes 45 minutes each way from Sanur, a port town on Bali's east coast. You leave your hotel in an air-conditioned car, get picked up after the day ends, and travel by fast boat during the crossing. The schedule compresses into a single day, which means you're in the water by mid-morning and back on land by late afternoon. Between snorkeling sessions, the boat moves to the next bay rather than returning to shore.

After the water, you visit four landmarks on Nusa Penida's west coast. Kelingking Beach is the most photographed: a white sand beach backed by a cliff shaped like a T-Rex's head, with views across the strait to Bali. Broken Beach has a natural rock arch framing turquoise water and a lagoon. Angel's Billabong is a natural infinity pool of emerald water perched above the ocean. Diamond Beach is the final stop. You walk to viewpoints, take photos and rest between sites. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.

Is this one for you?Book this trip if you want to spend most of the day in the water chasing manta rays and reef life, with the coastal landmarks as a second half rather than the main event. The fixed schedule and shared boat mean you move with a group, which keeps costs down but also means timing is set. If you prefer a private boat or flexible hours, look for a private snorkeling charter instead.

Top questions

Can I see manta rays when I snorkel at Manta Bay?

Manta Bay is known for manta rays, and they are present in the area, but sightings depend on the season and conditions on the day you visit. The bay also has coral reefs and other marine life, so you will see underwater life even if the mantas don't appear.

How long do I actually spend snorkeling versus traveling?

The 8 to 10 hour day includes the 45-minute boat ride each way, hotel pickup and drop-off, and time at four land sites. Most of the morning and early afternoon is spent in the water across the three bays, with breaks between them for the boat to move to the next location.

What's included in the snorkeling equipment?

Mask, fins and snorkel are provided. You bring your own swimsuit and towel, and wear reef-safe sunscreen if you have it. The guide can adjust equipment to fit, though bringing your own mask is an option if you prefer.

Is the fast boat ride rough, and what if I get seasick?

The crossing takes 45 minutes in a fast boat on open water, so it can be choppy depending on the day's conditions. The operator notes that this trip is not recommended for travelers prone to seasickness. If you're uncertain, ask about sea conditions when you book or consider a different activity.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel on this trip?

The operator requires a high level of physical fitness and notes the trip is not suitable for travelers with poor cardiovascular health or spinal injuries. Snorkeling itself does not require swimming skill, you float on the surface, but the boat ride, entry and exit, and time in the water demand comfort in the ocean.

What happens if the weather is bad or the sea is too rough?

Bad weather can affect boat schedules and snorkeling conditions. Contact the operator before your booking date to ask about their cancellation or rescheduling policy if conditions are unsafe.
