Two dives, two wrecks, one full day: the Liberty and the garden below

Full-day scuba diving in Tulamben centered on the USAT Liberty wreck, a cargo ship stranded for decades and now thick with coral and marine life. Hotel pickup starts at 7:30 AM. You meet your certified guide at 10:00 AM for safety briefing and gear setup, then descend for a 30–45 minute dive on the wreck, rest and eat lunch, and return for a second dive at the Coral Garden. The guide speaks English, Malay or Japanese. Certified divers and beginners are welcome on separate depth limits.

The experience

You start from your hotel at 7:30 AM and arrive at the meeting point by 10:00 AM, where your certified local guide waits with the dive instructor. The guide walks you through safety and equipment before a porter carries your full gear (tank, weights, and the rest) down to the water. Your first dive takes you to the USAT Liberty, a shipwreck that has been home to coral and fish for decades. You'll spend 30 to 45 minutes at depth, moving through the wreck and the reef growth that covers it.

After the first dive, you surface and rest while lunch is prepared: fried rice or noodle rice with a drink, local menu. The second dive heads to the Coral Garden, a stretch of reef formations that form a natural garden underwater, another 30 to 45 minutes at depth. Certified divers can go down to 30 meters. Beginners on the Try Scuba option stay at 12 meters or less. A porter handles the heavy lifting both times, so you carry only yourself and your focus.

The day ends with hotel drop-off after the dives are done. All scuba equipment is included (tank, weights, full gear set) along with the entrance ticket and shuttle service. Bring a valid diving certification if you have one. If you don't, the Try Scuba option is built for you and requires no prior experience, just a minimum age of 12.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Malay and Japanese.

What's the USAT Liberty wreck like when you get down there?

The USAT Liberty is a cargo ship that sank decades ago and is now covered in coral and surrounded by marine life: fish, coral formations, and the structure of the wreck itself. You'll spend your first dive exploring it at depth, moving through the reef growth and the ship's remains.

Can I dive if I've never done it before?

Yes. The Try Scuba option is for divers without certification. You'll receive full instruction from your certified guide and stay at a maximum depth of 12 meters. Fun Diving is for certified divers and allows depths up to 30 meters.

How much of the day is actually in the water?

You'll spend roughly 30 to 45 minutes on each of the two dives (the Liberty wreck and the Coral Garden) with rest, lunch, and travel time filling the rest of the 10-hour day from hotel pickup to drop-off.

Is there anything I should know before I book?

Diving is not recommended if you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have poor cardiovascular health. The activity is suitable for all fitness levels otherwise, and the minimum age is 12. If you have the flu or another acute illness, wait until you're well.
