The Experience

The boat was supposed to leave at 8, but the driver showed up at 7:45 asking if we wanted to start early — which meant we had to scramble to finish coffee and grab our stuff. That's the kind of thing that happens on a private tour: the schedule bends around you, not the other way around. Once we got to the harbor at Tawun, the motorized outrigger was already loaded with snorkeling gear, bottled water, and a cooler of lunch. It's a small boat, just enough room for your group, which is the whole point of booking private instead of joining a packed group tour.

The first stop was Gili Nanggu, the one they call Paradise Island, and I get why — the water is so clear you can see the coral from the boat. But the real trick came at Gili Sudak, where our guide handed us a plastic bottle with a spray cap and bread inside. You cut the bread into pieces, fill the bottle with water, and when you're in the shallows, you squeeze it and watch the fish come straight at you. They're tame and colorful, and there are a lot of them. It sounds gimmicky until you're actually doing it and a school of fish is swarming around your hands. After snorkeling, lunch was grilled seafood, rice, fruit and young coconut juice, eaten right there on the beach.

Gili Kedis came next — quieter, more space to swim and relax without the fish-feeding crowd. Then Gili Rengit, where the water stays calm even when the wind picks up elsewhere, so the coral visibility is sharp. Our guide pointed out a pipefish and some nudibranch eggs, the kind of small thing you'd miss on a bigger boat with a rushed schedule. By the time we headed back to Tawun harbor, we'd been on the water about seven hours, and the boat dropped us at our hotel instead of making us find our own way back.
