The Experience

I didn’t really know what I wanted from Lombok — just that I was tired of following someone else’s list. At one point, Pak Agus pulled over by a market because he thought we’d want to try fresh pisang goreng — fried bananas. He was right. They were hot and sweet, a bit greasy on the fingers. He laughed when I tried to say thank you in Bahasa Indonesia — probably butchered it. The whole day felt easy, not rushed; if we saw something interesting (like those women weaving sarongs in Sukarara), we just stopped. No pressure.

By afternoon, we were walking barefoot on Selong Belanak beach. The sand was so soft it squeaked underfoot — kind of odd but satisfying. There weren’t many people around except for some local surfers and an old man selling coconuts from a cart.
