The Experience

I never thought I’d be standing on the edge of Kroya Waterfall, toes curled over wet rock, counting down from three in my head while our guide Wayan grinned up at me from below. North Bali’s air felt heavy with that green smell you only get after rain—earthy, sweet. The sound of rushing water drowned out everything else. My heart was pounding louder than the falls themselves (I swear), but Wayan just shouted “You can do it!” and suddenly I was in the air, then underwater, eyes stinging and laughing like an idiot when I surfaced. That first jump was only five meters but felt much higher.

We’d started early from Ubud—pickup right at our guesthouse—so by the time we reached Aling-Aling Waterfalls, the sun was already burning through some leftover mist. There were four waterfalls in total: Kroya for jumping and sliding (that natural rock slide is way faster than it looks), Kembar for a ten-meter leap (my legs actually shook), Pucuk for fifteen meters (nope, I chickened out), and finally Aling-Aling itself—a massive 35-meter drop that’s more for looking than leaping. The guides were patient about everything; they even taught us how to land safely so you don’t smack your back (ask me how I know). And they kept joking around—one of them tried to teach me a Balinese phrase but I’m pretty sure I butchered it because he just laughed and shook his head.

Lunch was this Indonesian buffet overlooking rice fields—spicy chicken, fried tempeh, something leafy that tasted way better than it looked. After all that adrenaline, sitting there with wet hair and tired arms felt perfect. On the way back we stopped at Handara Gate for those classic photos everyone wants (it really is photogenic, even if you have to wait your turn). Honestly though, it’s the feeling of cold river water on my skin and Wayan’s laugh echoing off the rocks that stuck with me most. If you’re even half-considering a day trip to Aling-Aling Waterfalls from Ubud or anywhere nearby—just go. Even if you only jump once.
