The Experience

I barely had time to catch my breath after stepping out at the Aling Aling office in North Bali before our guide, Putu, was already waving us over. He grinned and asked if we’d slept well (I hadn’t — nerves), then handed out bottled water. The air smelled green, like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t place. We set off through the Cengana rice fields, the kind that look almost fake in photos but are very much real when your shoes start sinking a little. Putu stopped us by a Balinese compound where his aunt pressed slices of jackfruit into our hands—sticky, bright yellow, kind of floral. I tried to say thank you in Bahasa and got a laugh from her for my effort.

After that it was a short walk to what they called the Sambangan Secret Garden. Blue Lagoon is honestly a good name—it’s this pocket of turquoise water surrounded by jungle so thick you can’t see more than a few meters ahead. Some of the group jumped straight in; I hesitated because honestly it looked cold (it was). My skin tingled all over after that first plunge. Then we kept moving—there’s no lingering too long because the waterfalls were calling. Kroya Waterfall came first: Putu showed us how to slide down the rock face like it was nothing. I went for it, heart pounding so loud I barely heard the splash when I hit the pool below.

We worked our way through Kembar and Pucuk waterfalls too—each one with its own jump or slide, each one making me feel braver than before. You get this weird mix of adrenaline and calm here; between jumps there’s just bird calls and the sound of rushing water echoing off stone. At some point Putu cracked open young coconuts for us—cold coconut water tastes different when you’re standing barefoot on river stones, trust me.

The last stop was Aling Aling itself—taller than I expected, with mist hanging around its base like a veil. We just stood there for a while watching it thunder down into the pool below. I didn’t jump here (too high for me), but some did, whooping as they fell. Even now I still hear that roar sometimes when things get too quiet back home.
