Sidemen trekking tour through rice paddies villages & wooden bridge crossing

You’ll start at Sidemen’s lively market before trekking through lush rice paddies, crossing a wobbly wooden bridge, and watching daily life unfold around Mount Agung. Expect muddy paths, laughter with your guide, temple stops, and finally relaxing with food in Ogang village—this Sidemen trekking tour is less about distance than slowing down enough to notice everything around you.

Step-by-step itinerary

Trek through Sidemen village and rice fields

  • Start at Sidemen traditional market
  • Walk up to rice paddy fields
  • Follow irrigation toward Mount Agung
  • Cross hanging wooden bridge
  • Pass village and local temple
  • Walk up and down streets
  • Follow irrigation through rice fields
  • Observe locals working in fields

The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the view—it was the sound. Roosters somewhere behind the market stalls, a motorbike coughing to life, and this gentle clatter of women stacking fruit at Pasar Sidemen. Our guide, Ketut, waved us over by the “Upa Boga” sign. He handed me a bottle of water and grinned, “Slow walk today.” I thought he was joking (he wasn’t). We started weaving through the early morning smells—clove cigarettes, fried snacks—and then out into the open where the rice fields start. The path was muddy in places, soft under my boots. Sometimes you just have to trust your feet.

We followed narrow irrigation channels—Ketut called them “subak”—and I tried not to slip on the stones while watching farmers bent over in the green. There’s this quiet rhythm here: someone calling to a neighbor across the field, a kid chasing ducks along the edge. At one point we crossed this wooden bridge that looked like it belonged in an old movie—just wide enough for one motorbike and two nervous tourists. My friend joked about falling in; Ketut laughed and said it happens sometimes (I think he was kidding?). Mount Agung kept peeking out from behind clouds, never fully showing itself but always there if you looked sideways.

We passed a tiny temple where two women were placing offerings—little baskets of flowers and rice—and Ketut stopped to explain why they do it every day. I tried repeating what he said in Balinese; pretty sure I mangled it because he smiled politely but didn’t correct me. The path dipped and climbed again through more terraces, my legs starting to feel it but not wanting to stop. At one point I just stood still for a second—the sun came out all at once and everything felt impossibly bright. It’s strange how quiet it gets out here when you’re away from the main road.

The trek ended at Warung Ume Anyar in Ogang village—a simple place with cold drinks and tables overlooking yet more rice fields (as if you’d ever get tired of that view). We sat down sweaty and happy, shoes caked with mud, just letting our legs dangle for a while before figuring out how we’d get back to town. If you’re thinking about doing this Sidemen trekking tour, bring good shoes and don’t rush anything—you’ll want time for all those small moments that don’t fit on an itinerary.

What’s included

Your day includes bottled water handed out by your guide at Pasar Sidemen before setting off through rice fields and villages; after about two hours of walking—including that memorable wooden bridge—you’ll end up at Warung Ume Anyar restaurant in Ogang village where you can rest up or grab a meal before heading back home (just remember to arrange your own transport ahead of time).
