The Experience

You get picked up from your hotel on the morning of day one and head straight into Bali's art villages—Tohpati for batik, Celuk for gold and silver work where you watch craftspeople at their benches, and Batuan near the temple where painters fill the galleries. From there the minivan climbs toward the mountains to Tirta Empul Temple, a water temple where Balinese come to bathe in the sacred spring for healing. The road continues to Mt. Batur, the volcano also known as Kintamani, where you stand at the caldera's edge and look across the crater. A coffee plantation visit comes next—you'll learn how the beans are processed and can taste several varieties, including luwak coffee, made from beans collected after they pass through wild civets' digestive systems. You return to your hotel in the late afternoon.

Day two starts with another hotel pickup and a 30-minute drive to Taman Ayun, the royal family temple of the Mengwi Kingdom, built in the 1600s and ringed by a moat. From there it's a 35-minute drive to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, a water temple that sits on Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul and manages the irrigation system downstream—a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your last stop is Tanah Lot Temple, perched on a rocky outcrop above the ocean. You settle in at the cliff-side vantage point and watch the sun drop into the water, then return to your hotel.

On day three you visit Bajra Sandhi Monument in Denpasar, a monument to Balinese history and the struggle for independence. A half-hour drive takes you to Nusa Dua Beach, where you have time to relax on the white sand and in the clear water. Then it's another 30-minute drive to Uluwatu Temple, where you claim a prime cliff-side spot for the sunset over the ocean. Your driver explains the temple's history and religious significance as the light fades. If you've chosen the dance option, you'll watch the Kecack fire dance performed in the darkness before heading back to your hotel in the early evening.
