summary

Summary

From Ubud’s monkeys to sunset at Tanah Lot and seafood in Jimbaran

You’ll move from steamy monkey forests in Ubud to cool mountain lakes at Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, hike muddy paths to Sekumpul Waterfall’s thunderous spray, climb temple steps above East Bali’s clouds and end with grilled fish on Jimbaran Beach as dusk falls. Five days across Bali feels like five different worlds—each with its own rhythm.

Ever wondered if five days could actually change how you see a place? That’s what I kept thinking as our driver Wayan rolled us out of Ubud on day one. The air smelled faintly smoky from morning offerings — incense everywhere — and the first stop was the Monkey Forest. I’m not sure who was more curious: me or the macaques. Wayan laughed when one tried to unzip my backpack (apparently they’re pros). We wandered through Ubud Palace and the market, where I got lost in batik patterns and the kind of humidity that makes your shirt stick. Lunch was somewhere local — can’t remember the name, but the sambal still tingled hours later.

The next morning started early for western Bali. Taman Ayun Temple felt quiet compared to Ubud’s buzz; mossy stones underfoot and a group of older women chatting softly in Balinese near the entrance. At Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, mist drifted off the lake and I just stood there for a minute, not talking. Bedugul Market was chaos — chili peppers piled high, fruit sellers calling out prices I couldn’t quite follow. By late afternoon we were at Tanah Lot Temple for sunset. It’s busy, yeah, but watching locals set out tiny woven baskets of flowers by the sea made it feel personal somehow.

Northern Bali surprised me most — Sekumpul Waterfall is louder than you’d expect, like white noise turned up too high. The hike down is muddy (I slipped once; Wayan pretended not to notice), but standing in that cool spray with jungle all around… it’s hard to explain. Later we stopped at Handara Gate for that “Instagram photo” everyone wants; honestly, I liked watching an old man sweep leaves more than posing myself.

East Bali felt different again: Lempuyang Temple is all stairs and cloud-wrapped views — my legs were shaking by the top. Tirta Gangga Water Palace had koi fish so big they looked fake (I tried feeding them; they splash). By day five we ended up in Jimbaran Bay after seeing Garuda Wisnu Kencana and Uluwatu Temple (the Kecak dance was wild — so many voices chanting together). Eating seafood on the sand as night came down over Jimbaran Beach… well, I still think about that view sometimes.
