The experience

The tour departs Yogyakarta and heads south through toll roads to Malang or Lumajang, breaking for lunch along the way. This first day sets up the next morning's visit to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, where a cascade of streams drops from lush cliffs into a misty valley. The name means "thousand waterfalls" in Indonesian, and the sight justifies it. You'll stay overnight in Malang or Lumajang before heading to the Bromo area the following day.

Mount Bromo's sunrise is the centerpiece of day three. You'll wake before dawn, ride a 4x4 jeep across the vast sand sea (a volcanic plateau that looks like an alien landscape), and reach the crater rim as light breaks. The active volcano sits inside a larger caldera, and the scale of it (the sheer drop, the steam rising from the crater, the sweep of ash-covered ground) is something photographs don't quite capture. Breakfast is included, and you'll overnight in the Bromo area before traveling toward Ijen.

The final day is built around Ijen Crater's midnight trek. You'll hike in darkness to reach the crater rim just before sunrise, and as light arrives, the turquoise sulfur lake comes into view: a color so vivid it looks unreal. Local miners work the crater at night, carrying sulfur loads out on foot. You may encounter them on the trail. After sunrise and breakfast, the tour descends and drives to Ketapang Ferry Port, where you can catch a ferry to Bali or continue elsewhere. Your English-speaking guide and driver handle the entire route, and all fees, taxes, and accommodation are included in the price.

What is Tumpak Sewu Waterfall actually like when you get there?

Tumpak Sewu is a series of cascades dropping from a cliff face surrounded by lush vegetation and mist, creating the effect of many separate waterfalls flowing into a single pool below. The name means "thousand waterfalls" and refers to the way the water breaks into streams as it falls. You'll see it on day two of the tour after traveling from Yogyakarta.

Do I need special gear or fitness to trek Ijen Crater at midnight?

Ijen requires at least moderate physical fitness and sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good grip. The trek climbs about 700 meters to the crater rim in darkness, then descends after sunrise. The path is steep and rocky, and the air at the crater can be sulfurous. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health, and the minimum age is 17.

What's included in the 4-day tour price, and what do I pay separately?

The tour includes private transportation with an English-speaking driver, an English-speaking local guide, three nights of accommodation (in Malang or Lumajang, Bromo, and Ijen areas), breakfast on the Bromo and Ijen days, the 4x4 jeep ride across Bromo's sand sea, and all fees and taxes. Lunch and dinner are not included, and you'll arrange those on your own. Tipping for the driver and guide is optional.

Can I do this tour in fewer days?

Yes, a 3-day version is available that skips Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and focuses on Mount Bromo sunrise and Ijen Crater. The 3-day option includes two nights of accommodation (in Bromo and Ijen areas) and the same guide and driver services, ending at Ketapang Ferry Port.

Where does the tour end, and how do I get to Bali from there?

The tour ends at Ketapang Ferry Port on the eastern coast of Java. From there, you can take a ferry to Bali. The port has regular ferry services to Gilimanuk on Bali's west coast. The ferry crossing takes several hours depending on sea conditions.
