The Experience
Spike's River, also called the Nerul, sits on the quieter side of Goa—away from the beaches most visitors picture. A private vehicle picks you up from your hotel and drives you to Spike's Bridge, where your guide meets you. Before you paddle, you get a briefing on river conditions, the plants and animals you'll see, and how to handle the kayak and paddle. That setup matters: the river has mangroves, temples and churches visible from the water, and the wildlife—cormorants, egrets, herons, sea eagles, ospreys and river otters—shows up best when you move slowly and quietly under your own power.
Once you push off, the paddle itself is the point. You're watching the shoreline for birds perched in the mangrove branches and scanning the water for river otters and mud crabs. The guide paddles alongside and points out what's moving in the trees and the shallows. Halfway through, you pull over for a drink—fruit juice and water—before heading back downriver. The whole thing takes 2 to 3 hours, and the vehicle is waiting at the endpoint to drive you back to your hotel.
All kayaking gear comes with you: paddles, life vests, leashes and the kayak itself. Mineral water and snacks are included, so you're not managing hunger or thirst on the water. The guide speaks English and knows the river well enough to read where the otters hide and which trees the eagles favor.
What’s included
- Hotel pickup and drop-off in a private air-conditioned vehicle.
- all kayaking equipment including paddles, life vests and leashes.
- two bottles of mineral water per person.
- snacks.
- fruit juice during a mid-paddle break.
- and a local English-speaking guide-instructor who briefs you on the river, its wildlife and your gear before you start.
Operated by SITA World Tours
Is this one for you?You operate the kayak yourself on a guided paddle, which suits anyone who wants to move at their own pace and watch the river from water level rather than from a boat seat. The guide paddles alongside and points out birds and otters, so you get local knowledge without a lecture; if you prefer to sit back and let someone else navigate, a different boat tour would suit you better.
