Step-by-step itinerary
Kayaking on Goa backwaters

- Continue kayaking through tall grasses
- Return to hotel
The Experience
You get picked up from your hotel and driven to the backwaters edge, where your instructor meets you and walks through the water conditions and wildlife you'll encounter. Once you're in the kayak, the paddle starts: you'll navigate past mangrove roots, squeeze through tall grasses, duck under overhanging branches, and glide past bright red and white lotus flowers. The birds come into view gradually—Herons, Kingfishers, Egrets, Cormorants, Black-Headed Ibis and dozens of other species perched on branches or skimming the water. The silence of paddling is what makes them visible; a motorboat would scatter them.
Midway through, you pull the kayak to shore and rest under the shade of a tree with a cold fruit juice and snacks. The pace is yours—your instructor sets the route but you control the paddle and can linger at any spot that holds your attention. The water is shallow enough that you're never far from solid ground, and the life vest stays on throughout. By the end of the expedition, you've covered the main channels and seen the full range of what the backwaters hold. The driver takes you back to your hotel.

Is this one for you?Book this if you have a free afternoon and want to paddle on your own rather than sit in a motorboat—the silence is what brings the birds close. A moderate fitness level and comfort in the water are what make it work; serious heart or spinal conditions, pregnancy, or very young children (under 10) mean a different activity suits better.

How many bird species can I actually see on this kayaking trip?
Over 40 different species live in the Sal Backwaters, including Herons, Kingfishers, Egrets, Cormorants, Black-Headed Ibis and Water Fowls. You'll spot them at close range from the kayak because the paddle is silent and doesn't disturb them the way a motorboat would.
Do I need kayaking experience to book this?
No experience is required. Your instructor briefs you on the water and the kayak before you start, and the backwaters are shallow and calm. You do need at least a moderate level of fitness and no serious heart or spinal conditions; children from age 10 can join if an adult is with them.
What's included in the price?
All kayaking equipment—paddles, life vests, leashes—comes with the booking, plus hotel pickup and drop-off by private air-conditioned vehicle, a local English-speaking instructor, two bottles of mineral water per person, snacks, coffee or tea, and a fruit juice break during the paddle.
How long does the whole thing take?
The kayaking itself runs 2 to 3 hours on the water. Add time for pickup from your hotel, the drive to the backwaters, the instructor briefing, and the return journey—plan for a half-day outing from start to finish.
When can I book this kayaking trip?
The activity runs year-round except during monsoon season from May through September, when water levels and weather make paddling unsafe. Book for any other month, and a minimum of two people per booking is required.
