The Experience

You arrive at Spike's River with a guide who knows where the birds are. The kayak is fitted, the life vest goes on, and you push off into water lined with mangrove roots. For two hours you paddle at your own pace—fast or slow, it does not matter—while the guide navigates the tidal channels and stops where the birds are feeding. Kingfishers dive for fish. Osprey hunt from the air. Brahminy kites circle overhead. The mangroves are dense enough that you paddle into them when the tide is high, moving through a tunnel of roots and branches where the light changes and the sound of the river disappears.

The guide carries binoculars and knows the names of everything: red wattled lapwings, egrets, cormorants, fruit bats hanging in the trees. You do not have to spot anything yourself—the guide does that work—but the moment you see a bird move or hear a splash, you know what it was. The paddle is steady and the life vest holds you up, so the only thing you are managing is the rhythm of the stroke and where you point the bow. Bottled water and fruit juice are with you on the water.

Pickup is included, so you do not arrange transport to the river. The minimum group is two people; children from age 10 are welcome. The whole thing takes two hours, which fits into an afternoon if you have a free slot and want to be on the water instead of on a beach.
