Paddle through mangrove channels where kingfishers dive and otters hide

Kayak the Spike's Salonia Backwaters in Goa with a local guide leading you through mangrove channels and quiet nooks where birds and wildlife gather. A 15-minute briefing covers kayaking technique and safety; then you paddle for roughly 90 minutes, spotting kingfishers, osprey, sea eagles, egrets, herons, cormorants and occasionally shy otters. All kayaks, paddles, life vests and refreshments are provided; the guide speaks English or Hindi.

The Experience

Spike's Salonia Backwaters runs in some of Goa's cleanest waters, and the morning starts with a short briefing on paddling technique and safety protocol before you get on the water. The guide then leads you along the mangroves, where the river narrows into channels lined with different species of trees. Depending on the tide, you can explore deeper into some of the smaller creeks—the kind of places where the water stays still and the only sound is your paddle.

The wildlife here is the draw. Kingfishers perch on branches waiting for fish; osprey and sea eagles circle overhead; red-wattled lapwings call from the banks. Herons and cormorants work the shallows. If the timing is right, you might see peacocks in the wild along the shore. The shy otters that live in these backwaters are harder to spot, but they do appear, and when they do, the guide will point them out. Juice and bottled water keep you hydrated as you paddle, and the pace is relaxed—this is not a fitness test, it's a chance to move through the landscape at your own rhythm while the guide handles the route and the wildlife knowledge.

The whole outing runs about 90 minutes on the water. You'll need a minimum of one other person in your booking, and children from age 10 are welcome. The guide is local and speaks English or Hindi, so navigation and bird identification happen in real time as you paddle.
