Otters surface alongside your kayak as you paddle into the flooded mangrove tangle.

Paddle a kayak through the mangroves of Spike's Dogleg in Goa for two hours, watching otters and crabs move through the forest while an English-speaking instructor points out nesting birds and explains the water and the tangle ahead. Hotel pickup, all equipment, water and juice are included; a minimum of two people per booking.

The Experience

You get picked up from your hotel and driven to Spike's Bridge, where the kayaking starts. An instructor briefs you on the water currents and what to watch for—the birds, the otters, the crabs—before you get into your kayak and push off. The mangroves flood with the tide, which means you can paddle deep into the tangle of low-hanging branches instead of staying at the edge. The forest is thick enough that the light changes as you move through it.

As you paddle, you'll see kingfishers, ospreys, sea eagles, lapwings, egrets, herons and cormorants nesting in the branches. Lone fishermen work the shallows with crab traps. You stop under the shade of a tree for a break—juice and snacks—while the mangrove canopy holds the heat off. The instructor stays with the group the whole way, pointing out what moves and what is still. Then you paddle back to Spike's Bridge and get driven back to your hotel.

The two-hour window means you catch the tidal window when the water is high enough to let you move through the forest instead of around it. You bring nothing but yourself: the operator provides paddles, life vests, leashes, mineral water and juice. The boat traffic is light and the noise is mostly birds and the temple bells from somewhere inland.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off by private air-conditioned vehicle.
  • all kayaking equipment including paddles, life vests and leashes.
  • an English-speaking instructor for the full two hours.
  • two bottles of mineral water per person.
  • fruit juice and snacks during a mid-paddle break.

Is this one for you?The two-hour paddle is steady but not strenuous—you sit in the kayak the whole time and move at the pace of the group. Book this if you want to watch wildlife move through a forest canopy instead of scanning open water, and if you're comfortable sitting upright in a boat for the duration.

Top questions

What birds will I actually see on this kayaking trip in Goa?

Kingfishers, ospreys, sea eagles, lapwings, egrets, herons and cormorants nest in the mangrove branches along Spike's Dogleg. The instructor points them out as you paddle, and the flooded forest gives you a closer angle than you'd get from shore.

Do I need kayaking experience to paddle Spike's Dogleg?

No prior experience is required. The instructor briefs you on water currents and technique before you launch, and the mangrove channels are calm. You do need at least moderate physical fitness and the ability to sit upright in a kayak for two hours.

How does the tidal timing work for this mangrove kayaking in Goa?

The mangroves flood with the tide, which is what lets you paddle deep into the forest under the low branches instead of staying in open water. The operator times the departure so you catch the high-water window when the tangle is navigable.

What's included in the price for this Spike's Dogleg kayaking trip?

The kayaking expedition includes hotel pickup and drop-off by private air-conditioned vehicle, all equipment (paddles, life vests, leashes), an English-speaking instructor for the full two hours, two bottles of mineral water per person and fruit juice, plus a snack break under the trees.

What's the minimum age for children on this mangrove kayaking activity?

Children can join from age 10 onward. Anyone under 15 must be accompanied by an adult in the kayak or in the group.

Is there a minimum group size for booking this Goa kayaking experience?

Yes, a minimum of two people per booking is required. You'll be grouped with other paddlers on the expedition, and the instructor manages the whole party together.
