Paddle through mangrove forests and reach a working prawn hatchery

Kayak the River Nerul in Goa, paddling past mangrove forests, quaint villages and a prawn hatchery on calm backwater. Hotel pickup and drop-off, English-speaking instructor, kayak and safety gear, plus light refreshments after the paddle are all included. Operates October to April only.

The Experience

A hotel pickup gets you to Nerul Bridge in North Goa, near Candolim, where the expedition begins. The instructor covers the basics of handling the kayak and what to expect in the river currents before you push off. Once you're comfortable in the boat, you follow the guide as the mangrove forests close in on both sides and the water stays still enough to hear birds call. The villages along the banks appear gradually—Saipem first, then others—and you paddle past a working prawn hatchery before turning back at Nerul village and retracing the route to the start.

The whole paddle takes about three hours. Afterward, light refreshments wait at a local restaurant (you bring your own beverage if you want one), and the air-conditioned vehicle takes you back to your hotel. Two mineral water bottles come with you on the water.

What’s included

Top questions

What's the River Nerul like to paddle on?

The River Nerul has calm, still waters that make it manageable for paddlers of different abilities. The mangrove forests line both banks, and the quiet is broken mainly by bird calls and the sound of your paddle entering the water.

Do I need kayaking experience to book this?

No experience is required. The instructor gives you basic tips on handling the kayak and reading the river currents before you set off, and you have time to get comfortable in the boat before following the guide downstream.

What happens at the prawn hatchery?

You paddle past the working prawn hatchery as part of the route through the mangrove forests. It's one of the stops that shows the working life of the river and backwaters rather than just the natural scenery.

When does this kayaking trip operate?

The River Nerul kayaking runs from October to April only. Outside those months, the water conditions and weather make the paddle unsafe or uncomfortable.
