The experience

Pickup happens anywhere in Jaipur between 8 and 10 a.m., and the driver takes you straight to Jaigarh Fort, built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1726 on a hilltop called Cheel ka Teela. From there you get an aerial view of Jaipur and look down onto Amer Fort and Maota Lake: the vantage point most visitors miss because they start at Amer instead. The fort itself sits on the Aravalli range and was designed to protect the Amer palace complex below it.

Next is Amer Fort, the principal tourist draw in Jaipur, perched high on a hill 11 kilometres from the city center. Your guide walks you through the fort's layout and history. Then you stop at a historic stepwell with symmetrical stairways, a rainwater catchment that shows how the region managed water before modern systems. The stepwell's geometry is the kind of detail most tours skip, but it reveals how the palaces and forts were built to last.

The final stop is Jal Mahal, a palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. Maharaja Jai Singh II renovated and enlarged it in the 18th century. You view it from the shore. The lake and palace together are the photograph most visitors come for. After that, the driver takes you back to anywhere in Jaipur you want to be dropped.
