The Experience

The car pulled up just as I was still fumbling for my sunglasses — Delhi at 6am is a weird mix of sleepy and busy, you know? There were already a couple of folks in the van, half-awake but smiling. Our driver handed out cold water bottles (blessing) and we set off through the city haze. I sat next to Priya, who turned out to be from Bangalore and somehow knew every Hindi song on the radio. The drive to Agra is long but not boring — you pass these stretches of fields that look gold in the morning light, and sometimes you catch a whiff of chai from roadside stalls when we slowed down.

When we finally reached Agra, our guide Anil hopped in. He was quick with stories — like how Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his wife, but also pointed out tiny details I’d never have noticed on my own: the way the marble changes color depending on where you stand, or how the calligraphy gets bigger as it goes higher so it looks even from below. He offered to take photos for us (“stand here, trust me!”) and honestly, those are some of my favorite pictures now. The Taj Mahal itself… well, it’s hard to describe without sounding dramatic. It’s quieter than I expected inside the gates — just footsteps on stone and soft voices. At one point I caught this faint scent of jasmine drifting by; maybe someone had brought flowers.

Lunch was at this place Anil recommended — nothing fancy but really good dal and naan. We all ended up sharing dishes because nobody could decide what to order (the butter chicken vanished first). After that it was back into the van for the ride home. Everyone was a little sun-tired and quiet; I kept thinking about that first glimpse of the Taj through the archway. It sticks with you more than you’d expect.
