The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in Chandni Chowk — it’s just this wild tangle of people, rickshaws, smells (spices and something sweet I couldn’t place), and the clang of metal shutters opening up. Our guide Naveen kept us from getting lost more than once. He pointed out a tiny stall selling jalebi and grinned when I hesitated; I tried it anyway — syrupy, hot, sticky fingers for the rest of the walk. Jama Masjid was quieter than I thought it would be. Pigeons everywhere. The stone felt cool under my feet.

The drive to Agra was longer than I’d pictured (maybe three hours?), but watching the landscape change out the window made it feel like we were moving through different worlds. At Agra Fort, our local guide Saira told stories about emperors that sounded half like myths. She had this way of making you see old stones as living things. And then sunrise at the Taj Mahal — honestly, I thought it might be overhyped but when the marble started glowing pink and gold, everyone just went quiet for a minute. Even the air felt softer somehow.

Jaipur was warmer — both in color and in mood. The City Palace is still partly lived-in by royalty, which is kind of wild if you think about it. Our driver Raj stopped for chai near Hawa Mahal (he said his friend made “the best” — he wasn’t wrong). The wind through those little windows really does cool you down; I leaned against the pink stone for a second longer than I meant to. Jantar Mantar looked almost surreal against the sky — these giant instruments casting odd shadows everywhere. By then my shoes were covered in dust but I didn’t care much.

I keep thinking about Mehtab Bagh at sunset across from the Taj Mahal — just sitting on a bench with my legs stretched out while kids played nearby and everything smelled faintly of grass after rain. There’s so much packed into this Golden Triangle tour from Delhi to Agra and Jaipur that you can’t really process it all until later. Maybe that’s why I still catch myself daydreaming about those colors or the sound of temple bells somewhere far off.
