The experience

The tour starts in New Delhi with a full day exploring both the old and new city. You'll walk through the Red Fort, a UNESCO site with 17th-century Mughal structures, then move through Chandni Chowk's crowded bazaars before reaching Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. The afternoon takes in India Gate, the Presidential Palace (Rashtrapati Bhavan), Humayun's Tomb, and Qutub Minar: the world's tallest brick minaret at 73 meters, built in 1193. Your private vehicle and guide handle the logistics between sites. Bottled water is provided throughout.

Day two is the drive to Agra. You'll see Agra Fort, the massive red sandstone military center built by Emperor Akbar, and Itmad-ud-Daula, the marble mausoleum known as the "Baby Taj." The evening takes you to Mehtab Bagh, a Mughal garden across the river from the Taj Mahal: the best spot for sunset views of the monument. On day three, you visit the Taj Mahal itself at sunrise, then travel to Fatehpur Sikri, the 16th-century city built by Emperor Akbar, before driving to Jaipur.

Jaipur's full day covers the City Palace, a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles still home to the royal family; Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century astronomical observatory with massive instruments for tracking celestial bodies; Hawa Mahal, the five-story Palace of Winds with 953 small windows; and the Albert Hall Museum, Rajasthan's oldest museum. On the final morning, you're driven back to Delhi and dropped at your hotel or airport. A battery-powered cart ride gets you from the Taj Mahal parking area to the monument itself, saving the walk in Agra's heat.
