The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound—Delhi waking up outside the car window as we set off. Our guide, Rajiv, had this way of telling stories that made even traffic jams feel like part of the adventure. At Humayun’s Tomb I ran my hand along the cool stone and tried to picture what Delhi looked like centuries ago. The air smelled faintly of incense and diesel—somehow both ancient and right-now. By afternoon we were on the road to Agra, watching fields blur past until suddenly there was nothing but the soft glow of hotel lamps and a sense that tomorrow would be big.

I didn’t expect to feel so quiet standing in front of the Taj Mahal at sunrise. There were other people around but for a minute it felt like just me and this strange morning light.
