The Experience

The Red Fort rises in front of you, 108 feet of red sandstone wall holding four centuries of Delhi inside it. That's where this tour starts—after breakfast on day one, you move through the capital's main landmarks: Qutub Minar (237 feet high, hard to miss), Raj Ghat where Gandhi was cremated, India Gate, and Humayun's Tomb, the 16th-century marble predecessor to the Taj Mahal itself. By afternoon you're on the road to Agra, where the real weight of the trip begins.

Day two is the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, both on the Yamuna River bank. Your guide meets you at the monument—take the time to stand there, because the photographs never quite catch it. After that, Agra Fort (built by Emperor Akbar in 1565) and Mehtab Bagh, a series of 11 parks along the river's east bank. Then you drive toward Ranthambore National Park, where the landscape starts to open up and the air changes.

The morning safari at Ranthambore is the hinge of the whole trip. You ride in a shared gypsy with a nature guide, and the park is where you might see tigers, panthers, hyenas, jungle cats—or you might not, which is also the point. Wildlife doesn't perform on schedule. After breakfast you're driven to Castle Talabgaon, a 200-year-old Indian fort turned heritage hotel, where you stay one night and do a village safari in the evening to see how people actually live in rural Rajasthan. It's a different kind of sightseeing, slower and less structured than the monument circuit.

The last two days are Jaipur: Birla Mandir temple, Albert Hall Museum, City Palace (Rajasthani and Mughal architecture mixed together), Hawa Mahal (the five-story pink building built so royal women could watch processions unseen), and Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century stargazing observatory. You get a jeep ride up to Amber Fort too. Then you're driven back to Delhi—airport or hotel, your choice—and the tour ends.

All transport is in an air-conditioned vehicle with an experienced driver. Accommodation is 3-star hotels except for the one night at Castle Talabgaon. Dinner is included every night, along with all entry fees, the jungle safari, the village safari, and every tax and toll between cities. You need moderate fitness—the safaris and walking around forts and temples involve some physical movement, but nothing extreme.
