The experience

The day splits into two distinct halves, each one designed to build on the other. You start by gearing up for the zipline course, where the route is laid out to give you views across the lush landscape as you move from platform to platform. The guides brief you on technique and safety, then you clip in and move through the canopy at your own pace: beginners and experienced zippers both get the same course, but the guides adjust how much coaching and encouragement you get. After roughly ninety minutes of ziplining, you head back down and transition straight into the water portion.

The snorkeling happens at a site chosen specifically to avoid the busier reefs where cruise ship groups congregate. You'll use the provided mask, fins and snorkel to explore coral formations and watch for tropical fish, sea turtles and rays moving through the water. The guide stays in the water with you, pointing out what to look for and keeping an eye on the group. The whole activity runs about three and a half hours from pickup to drop-off, with the zipline taking up the first half and the snorkeling the second.

An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and brings you to the zipline site, then to the water afterward. The guides speak English and Spanish, so if you're more comfortable in one language, let the operator know when you book. You'll need at least a moderate fitness level for the ziplining. It's not technical climbing, but you're moving through the air and need the strength to hold yourself steady on the platforms and during the transitions between lines.
