The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your accommodation and heads straight into the sightseeing that makes Roatan distinct. You'll stop at the highest point on the island for panoramic photos with Coxen Hole city and the ship in the background, then move into the mini rainforest where natural trails open onto the wildlife sanctuary. This is where you encounter white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, birds and hummingbirds in their habitat: the guide walks you through what you're seeing and the animals' role in the island ecosystem.

The chocolate factory comes next, where you learn how cacao beans are processed and taste a variety of artisanal chocolates made right there on the island. The factory also produces coffee and vanilla, both grown locally. After chocolate, you head to the Roatán Rum Company, a hilltop distillery known for small-batch rums infused with tropical flavors: mango, coconut and chocolate among them. You'll get a briefing on how the rum is made, then sample different types, rum cakes and the banana rum cake the operator specifically highlights. The Blendatorium lets you create a custom rum blend if you want to take something home.

Along the way, the tour includes stops for souvenir shopping in West End village and at the colorful Roatan sign for photos. When does the Roatan Rum Company close?

The Roatán Rum Company is closed on Sundays, so the tour will not include the rum distillery stop if it's scheduled for that day. Check your tour date before booking.
