The experience

Seven hours covers the main stops without rushing through them. You start at St Gerasimos Monastery in the Omala Valley, where the island's patron saint's body rests in a silver and glass casket inside one of two churches built over a cave where he once lived as a hermit. The stop lasts about twenty minutes. Next is Robola Winery, also in the valley, where a thirty-minute visit includes a guided walk through the wine-making process and a tasting of the products.

Drogarati Cave is the physical centerpiece: a large underground chamber filled with stalactites and stalagmites that you explore on foot for about forty minutes, then board a boat for a full hour. The boat ride is the signature moment: sunlight hits the crystal-clear water and fills the cavern with blue light while the boatman points out rock formations. After that comes lunch and free time in Agia Efimia, a small fishing harbor on the eastern coast where you have an hour and a half to eat and walk around the village.

The return journey follows the western coast, the most scenic stretch of the island. You stop briefly to photograph Myrtos Beach, one of Europe's most photographed beaches, then drive back to Argostoli in about forty minutes. Your guide talks through the scenery and history during the two hours of driving that connects the main attractions.
