The experience
The tour opens at Knossos, the Bronze Age palace complex of King Minos: over 1,500 interlocking rooms built for a Bronze Age ruler and home to the myth of the Minotaur. From there you move into Heraklion's Archaeological Museum, where the original Minoan frescoes and Bronze Age jewelry sit in one of Europe's most significant collections. The guide then walks you through Heraklion's major monuments, moving between old and new, and you taste local samples: rusks, olives, cheese, coffee or soft drink as you go.
Day two takes you west into the Venetian architecture and layered history of two cities. Rethymnon's narrow streets open onto the old Venetian port, where fishing boats still tie up and tavernas line the water. You walk past the Loggia, the lion fountain, minarets, and traditional workshops, and taste extra virgin olive oil, spices and herbs before moving to Greek mezes: small plates of centuries-old tradition. The route then continues to Margarites, a traditional pottery village, before reaching Chania. The western capital sits at the crossroads of civilizations: Venetian bastions, a covered market, the old port, shipyards, cathedrals, churches, a synagogue and an old mosque all stand within walking distance, and your guide navigates you through them on foot.
The final day heads east along mountain ridges and coastline toward Elounda and Spinalonga Island. A boat carries you across to Spinalonga, known as the island of tears, where your guide leads a tour of the ruins. Afterward, ouzo and meze wait in the small fishing village of Plaka, and then a short drive takes you to Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi, where you have free time by the harbor. (During winter, Spinalonga Island visits depend on conditions, the tour shifts to more time at Mirabello Gulf and Agios Nikolaos instead.) The return follows the national road back toward Heraklion, the sea air and turquoise water lingering.
