The experience

Eight to ten hours means you move through four distinct landscapes without rushing. The route begins in Mochos, a mountainous village with cobblestoned streets and views that open as you climb. You'll walk under the Writers' Plane Tree (a 2,400-year-old specimen in Krasi where locals still gather), and see the mills of the Lasithi Plateau from above before descending into the Cave of Zeus, an ancient Minoan sacred site believed to be the birthplace of the god. The plateau itself spreads below you, a high valley ringed by mountains and dotted with windmills.

Knosos Palace is the day's anchor: the oldest civilization in Europe, where Minos ruled and the Minotaur legend took root. The palace sprawls across a hillside outside Heraklion, its reconstructed columns and storage rooms giving shape to Bronze Age power. If the pace allows, you can add the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of Europe's most important, to see the frescoes, pottery and small sculptures that survived the palace's collapse.
