Walk through Europe's oldest city, then wander a Venetian fortress town

A private tour from Chania visits the Palace of Knossos, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the coastal city of Rethymno over a full day. You choose between a guided experience at Knossos or self-guided exploration, and between a small group (1–6 people) or a larger one (7–15). Transport, snacks and cold drinks come with every option; the museum entry is separate.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Knossos, Museum, and Rethymno

  • Visit Palace of Knossos ruins
  • Tour Archaeological Museum of Heraklion
  • Free time in Rethymno old town

The Experience

The day starts at Knossos, the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and the oldest city in Europe. The palace sits 5 km southeast of Heraklion in the valley of the river Kairatos, and the ruins span thousands of years of Minoan civilization—from its first Neolithic settlement in the seventh century BC until its abandonment in 1375 BC. If you book the guided option, a guide walks you through the site and explains the myths attached to it: the Labyrinth, the Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus. Without a guide, you explore at your own pace.

Next comes the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the largest and most visited museums in Greece. The Minoan collection holds over 15,000 artefacts—frescoes, jewelry, tools, ceremonial items—that bring the ancient world into focus. The building itself, constructed between 1937 and 1940, echoes Minoan design in its colors and materials. You'll need to budget time here; entry is not included with the tour, so you pay separately at the door.

The afternoon takes you to Rethymno, a coastal town 58 km west of Heraklion, built on a cape at the northern edge of Crete. You have free time to walk the old town's narrow streets, where Venetian mansions, Ottoman mosques, orthodox and Catholic churches, and the massive Fortezza castle create layers of history. The town sits between Chania and Heraklion, so the drive itself becomes part of the day. The van is air-conditioned, has WiFi on board and USB charging ports; cold drinks, juice, beer and bottled water are provided, along with a snack box of sandwiches and Cretan pastries.

Top questions

What's actually inside the Palace of Knossos when I get there?

Knossos is an archaeological site of ruins and reconstructed sections spread across a large area. The palace was the center of Minoan civilization and was first excavated in 1900–1913 and again in 1922–1930 by Sir Arthur Evans. You walk through the remains of this Bronze Age settlement, which was inhabited for thousands of years before its destruction in 1375 BC marked the end of Minoan civilization.

Do I have to book the guided tour at Knossos, or can I explore on my own?

The guided tour at Knossos is optional. You can choose a private group (1–6 people) or larger group (7–15 people) without a guide, or book the 1–6 person option with a guide included. If you skip the guide, you explore the palace at your own pace.

Is the Heraklion Archaeological Museum included in the tour price?

The Archaeological Museum is not included with any tour option. You pay for entry separately when you arrive. The museum holds one of the world's most important Minoan collections, with over 15,000 artefacts spanning 5,500 years from the Neolithic period to Roman times.

How much free time do I get in Rethymno?

The itinerary gives you free time in Rethymno to explore the old town on your own. The town's narrow streets, Venetian architecture, the Fortezza castle and the waterfront are all walkable from the center, so you can spend the afternoon discovering what interests you most.

What's included in the van during the drive?

The air-conditioned van includes WiFi, USB charging ports, cold soft drinks, juice, beer and bottled water. You also get a snack box with sandwiches and Cretan pastries. Private transportation from Chania is included with all options.
