The experience
The tour starts in Chania, the old capital, where you walk through the Old Town's five quarters: narrow streets lined with small houses that survived centuries of conquest by Greek, Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian powers. The Venetian Port anchors the town's character. From there, the route heads west toward Kournas Lake, Crete's only freshwater lake, ringed by mountain views and sitting 25 meters deep. The water is clear enough to see why the lake drew legends: one tells of a girl turned to water by her father's transgression. Another speaks of a whole village punished for its ways. The lake's depth and isolation make it feel removed from the island's busier coasts.
The final stop is Rethymno, a smaller and less crowded town than Chania but still layered with history. The Fortezza Fortress rises from the port: a 16th-century defensive structure built by the Venetians and still intact enough to offer views across the whole town. The Venetian lighthouse stands as a backdrop for photographs. On Platanos Square, the Rimondi Fountain sits with three lion heads carved into its pedestal, another Venetian mark on the town. Medieval buildings, cathedrals in Venetian style, temples and mosques fill the streets.
