The experience
The day starts in the Katharo Plateau, where you meet your driver and begin a Land Rover route through mountain villages and countryside before heading to Plaka, the departure point for the speedboat. The private boat takes you to Spinalonga Island, where you have roughly an hour to walk the fortress and its history before returning to the mainland. The guide narrates what you see on the island and later in Milatos Cave, a 10-minute walk where the cave's history and the events that unfolded there come into focus.
After the cave, you stop at a family-run olive oil factory on the Katharo Plateau for a guided tour and tasting of different grades and varieties. Lunch follows at a local taverna with fresh ingredients and wine included. On the return drive through the mountains, the route opens up views across the Gulf of Mirabello and back toward Spinalonga. The whole day runs about seven hours from start to finish.
A live guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and several other languages. Hotel pickup is included. The Spinalonga entrance fee and the boat transfer to the island are paid on the day. The Land Rover has air conditioning, and bottled water is provided throughout.
