The Experience

Ever wondered if the myths about Knossos feel different when you’re actually standing there? I did, until our driver—Manolis, who somehow knew every shortcut and every family running a shop—pulled up outside the palace gates. The stones were warm under my hand and there was this faint smell of wild herbs in the air, almost like oregano but sharper. Manolis told us how his grandmother used to walk these grounds as a girl, which made me look at the ruins differently. We didn’t rush. I liked that.

After that we drove through olive groves so old their trunks looked twisted by time itself. The olive mill was run by a family who’d been pressing oil for generations—Maria handed me a slice of bread dipped in their new harvest oil, peppery and grassy at once (I probably ate too many slices).
