The experience

The tour centers on two sites that define Nuremberg's role in the twentieth century's darkest chapter. The Palace of Justice held the trials of surviving German war criminals from November 1945 through October 1946, then hosted twelve subsequent U.S. military tribunals through 1949. Courtroom 600, where the main proceedings took place, still stands in the eastern wing: now smaller than during the trials, with the judges' bench repositioned and a wall that had been removed for space restored to its original place. The courtroom remains in active use for murder trials today.

The Nazi Party Rally Grounds occupy 4 square kilometers in Nuremberg's southeast corner. From 1933 to 1938, the National Socialists staged massive rallies here as propaganda displays meant to project power across Germany and the world. The Zeppelinwiese, redesigned between 1935 and 1937 by Albert Speer, still dominates the landscape with its grandstands and the Zeppelin building: the only completed structure on the entire grounds. The Documentation Center provides a comprehensive exhibition on the National Socialist dictatorship and the history of the Party Rallies, with information boards across the site explaining how this machinery of propaganda was organized and produced. A 1929 monument honoring 9,000 Germans who died in World War I also features on the route, though the Nazis repurposed it for their own propaganda.

Your private guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian and travels with your group throughout the 3-hour tour. Pickup from your hotel or a central location is included. Groups stay under eight people, and the tour works for all fitness levels. Bring comfortable walking shoes. Much of the day is spent outdoors on the Rally Grounds.

Is this one for you?Book this private tour if you want a guide who can explain the historical context and answer questions as you move between sites: the Palace of Justice courtroom and the vast Rally Grounds require interpretation to understand their significance. A shared group tour would dilute that attention. A self-guided visit leaves you without the framework to grasp what you're standing in front of.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

What exactly is Courtroom 600 and why does it matter?

Courtroom 600 in the Palace of Justice is where the International Military Tribunal tried the major surviving Nazi war criminals between November 1945 and October 1946. It was chosen because the building survived bombing almost intact, offered enough space, and included a large prison complex attached. The choice of Nuremberg itself was symbolic. The Nazis had held their largest rallies in this city. The courtroom is still used today, primarily for murder trials, though it was refurbished after the trials ended and is now smaller than it was during the proceedings.

How much of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds can I actually see?

The Rally Grounds cover 4 square kilometers, and the tour takes you through the key structures and sites. The Zeppelin building, designed by Albert Speer and completed between 1935 and 1937, is the only finished building on the entire grounds and dominates the Zeppelinwiese parade field. The Documentation Center provides an exhibition and information boards across the site explaining how the rallies were organized and what the structures were meant to convey. Most of the other planned buildings were never completed, but their remains still stand as evidence of the regime's ambitions.

Is there a guide, or do I walk around on my own?

A live guide leads the entire tour and travels with your group throughout the 3 hours. You choose the language (English, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian) when you book. The guide provides context at each stop and answers questions as you move between the Palace of Justice and the Rally Grounds.

When should I avoid booking this tour?

The Palace of Justice is closed on Tuesdays, so any tour including that site cannot run on that day. If Tuesday is your only free day, you would need to book a different date or choose a tour focused only on the Rally Grounds.
