Max's Montmartre Cheese Room: 8 Cheeses, 5 Wines, One Afternoon

You'll taste eight French cheeses paired with five wines in a stone-walled Montmartre room, guided by Max or a trained member of his team who explains the regions, techniques, and stories behind each one. Fresh bread and water are included. The group stays small, the pace is relaxed, and you leave understanding why French people take cheese seriously — not because someone told you to, but because you tasted it.

Step-by-step itinerary

Cheese and wine tasting in Montmartre

  • Meet local cheesemonger guide
  • Discover French cheese making secrets
  • Taste 8 French cheeses
  • Taste 5 paired French wines
  • Learn about regions and techniques
  • Enjoy relaxed tasting in stone-walled space

The Experience

"The cheese tells you where it came from — the grass, the season, the hands that made it," Max says as he sets down a wedge of Comté, and you realize this isn't going to be a rushed tasting where someone reads from a card. He's been running this small room in Montmartre for three years, and the 3,000-plus guests who've come through have left the same kind of review: they felt like they were learning from someone who actually cares. The space itself helps — stone walls, low light, the kind of place that makes you slow down before you even taste anything.

You'll work through eight cheeses, moving from the ones everyone knows (a proper Brie, a sharp Roquefort) to the ones that make you pause and ask what you're tasting. Each one gets paired with one of five French wines, including a sparkling that opens things up at the start. Max or one of his trained hosts walks you through the regions — Normandy, the Loire, the Alps — and explains what you're actually tasting: why this one is creamy, why that one crumbles, how the cows' diet changes the flavor. It's the kind of detail that sticks with you after you leave, the kind that makes you understand why French people take this seriously. There's fresh bread too, and as much bottled water as you want, which matters more than it sounds when you're moving through eight different tastes.

The whole thing runs in small groups — not a crowd, not a lecture. You're in a room with maybe a dozen other people, all of you leaning in, asking questions, occasionally laughing when someone tries to describe a taste and lands on something unexpected. It's the opposite of the standard Paris experience, which is partly why people keep booking it and partly why Max's team has stayed consistent even as the business grew. If you want to understand French cheese culture without spending three hours in a formal class or wandering a market alone trying to guess what's good, this is the shortcut that doesn't feel like a shortcut.
