The Experience
The morning didn’t go exactly as planned — I got off at the wrong metro stop and ended up wandering past three bakeries before finally finding the Musée Vivant du Fromage. The smell hit me first, that buttery, slightly sharp scent you only get in real cheese shops. Inside, our guide Camille greeted us with this easy warmth (and a joke about my pronunciation of “fromage” — I deserved it). There were maybe eight of us, all a bit nervous but curious, shuffling around the little prep tables.
Camille led us into the back room where we’d actually make cheese. I expected something complicated, but it was more like magic — milk swirling in big bowls, steam rising up and fogging my glasses. She explained each step in this mix of French and English, never making anyone feel silly for asking basic questions. At one point she handed me a ladle and said, “Go on, you try.” My hands shook a bit but somehow it worked. The texture was soft and warm between my fingers — honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy that part so much.
Afterwards we sat around a long wooden table for the tasting. They poured us glasses of white wine (dry but not too sharp) and brought out wedges of cheeses I’d never even heard of. Camille told stories about each one — apparently there’s a whole debate about which region does goat cheese best. Someone from our group tried to settle it but just made everyone laugh instead. The whole thing felt relaxed, like being invited into someone’s kitchen rather than a formal class.
I left with my own little wheel of fresh cheese wrapped up in paper — still warm through the bag — and this odd sense of pride. It’s strange how something so simple can stick with you; sometimes when I open my fridge now, I still think about that afternoon in Paris.
