Identify three champagnes blind, then eat your way through the region's flavors

A champagne tasting class and lunch at Le Clos Corbier in Mareuil-sur-Ay, near Epernay, where you train your palate to spot aromas and flavors, compete to identify three blind tastings, and finish with a three-course lunch of homemade regional dishes paired with champagne and local wines. The experience runs three hours and caps at twelve people, with an English-speaking guide leading the whole day.

The experience

You arrive at 10:30am at Le Clos Corbier, a typical Champagne House set in the middle of the vineyards. The cellars themselves were dug in the 1850s, and your guide walks you through them first, showing you the traditional press and explaining how champagne actually gets made: the part most people skip. Then you sit down for the tasting class: a champagne quiz gets you thinking about what you're drinking, and an olfactory workshop trains your nose to pick out the different aromas and flavors hiding in each glass.

The blind tasting is where it gets competitive. You'll identify three different champagnes from small wineries without seeing the labels, all while eating local snacks to cleanse your palate between pours. After that comes lunch: homemade regional specialties like pâté en croute, Langres cheese, and pink biscuit cake, each course paired with a different champagne. You also taste Coteaux Champenois, the local red wine, and Ratafia, the regional liquor. The whole thing wraps around 1:30pm.

The winery handles dietary restrictions and allergies. Just tell them at least 24 hours before you arrive. Public transportation runs nearby if you're staying in Epernay or another town without a rental car.
