The Experience

The air felt cool as we stepped off the plane in Lalibela—just a hint of wood smoke drifting from the hills. Our driver was waiting, smiling and holding up a little sign with my name. The road into town wound through quiet farmland; kids waved as we passed, and the first thing I noticed was how peaceful everything seemed compared to Addis. After a quick check-in at the lodge (the coffee in the lobby is worth trying), we set out to see the famous rock-hewn churches.

Our guide, Tesfaye, led us first to Bet Medhane Alem. He explained it’s the largest monolithic church in the world—standing inside, you really feel how massive it is. The stone underfoot was cool and smooth, worn down by centuries of footsteps. We moved on through narrow tunnels connecting Bete Maryam and Bete Golgotha, where you can spot faded paintings if you look closely. There’s this faint scent of incense everywhere, especially near the Selassie Chapel. Later, at Bete Giyorgis—the one shaped like a cross—Tesfaye pointed out tiny carved windows I’d never have noticed on my own.

Early next morning, before sunrise, we joined locals gathering for Sabbath prayers. The sound of chanting echoed softly between the stone walls; some people wore crisp white shawls, others carried small bunches of wildflowers. It felt both intimate and open—nobody minded us being there, just quietly observing. By 10 am, after a quick breakfast (injera with honey at the hotel), we were back at the airport for our flight to Addis Ababa.
